Fluid Filter - A/T: Service and Repair






FLUID AND FILTER REPLACEMENT

WARNING: Be certain the procedure for the high voltage check-out has been performed and the service disconnect has been disconnected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious or fatal injury.

REMOVAL





1. Raise and support the vehicle. Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect the transmission auxiliary oil pump electrical connector.
3. Remove the bolt (1) securing the auxiliary oil pump harness (2) to the transmission bellhousing (3).





4. Remove the transmission auxiliary oil pump bolts (1) and then remove the pump (2).





5. Place a suitable container under the transmission pan (1).
6. Remove the drain plug, if equipped.
7. Remove bolts holding front and sides of oil pan to transmission.
8. Loosen bolts holding rear of oil pan to transmission.
9. Slowly separate front of oil pan (1) away from transmission (4), allowing the fluid to drain into the drain pan.
10. Supporting the oil pan, remove remaining bolts securing pan to transmission.
11. While holding the oil pan level, lower it from transmission.
12. Pour any remaining fluid in pan into drain pan.
13. Separate the primary (2) and auxiliary (3) oil filters from valve body and oil pump and pour fluid from the filters into drain pan.
14. Inspect the oil filter seal in the bottom of the oil pump. If the seal is not installed completely in the oil pump, or is otherwise damaged, then remove with a suitable tool, and discard the oil filter seals from the bottom of the oil pump. If the seals are installed correctly and are in good condition, they can be reused.
15. Dispose of used transmission fluid and filter(s) properly.

INSPECTION

Inspect the bottom of the oil pan and magnet for excessive amounts of metal. A light coating of clutch material on the bottom of the oil pan does not indicate a problem unless accompanied by a slipping condition or shift lag. If fluid and oil pan are contaminated with excessive amounts of debris, refer to the diagnosis section.

CLEANING

1. Using a suitable solvent, clean the oil pan and magnet.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: The primary and auxiliary oil filter seals MUST be fully installed flush against the oil pump body. DO NOT install the seals onto the filter neck and attempt to install the filter and seal as an assembly. Damage to the transmission will result.





1. If necessary, install new primary (2) and auxiliary (2) oil filter seals in the oil pump inlet bore. Seat the seal in the bore with Installer 6960 or another suitable tool (appropriately sized drift or socket, the butt end of a hammer etc.).
2. Place new primary (2) and auxiliary (3) oil filters in position on valve body and into the oil pump.
3. Position the oil pan (1) on transmission.
4. Install bolts to secure pan to transmission. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).





5. Install the auxiliary oil pump (2). Install the bolts (1) and tighten to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.).





6. Install the bolt (1) securing the auxiliary oil pump harness (2) to the transmission bellhousing (3). Tighten the bolt to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.).
7. Connect the auxiliary oil pump electrical connector.
8. Lower the vehicle and remove.
9. Fill the transmission with DEXRON(R) VI. Transmission Fill
