5 Volt Over Voltage

5 VOLT OVER VOLTAGE





For a complete wiring diagram refer to diagrams.
^ When Monitored:
Continuously with the ignition on.
^ Set Condition:
The Transfer Case Control Module detects that the 5 Volt Supply circuit voltage goes above 6.0 volts for 2 seconds.

Possible Causes

- INTERMITTENT 5 VOLT OVER VOLTAGE
- CHARGING SYSTEM DTCS PRESENT
- 5 VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT(S) SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
- (T322) 5 VOLT SELECTOR SWITCH SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T315) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL A
- CIRCUIT
- (T322) 5 VOLT SELECTOR SWITCH SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T316) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL B
- CIRCUIT
- (T313) 5 VOLT MODE SENSOR SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T315) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL A CIRCUIT
- (T313) 5 VOLT MODE SENSOR SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T316) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL B CIRCUIT
- TRANSFER CASE CONTROL MODULE

1. CHARGING SYSTEM DTCS PRESENT
With the DRBIII read Engine DTCs.

Are there any Charging System related DTCs present?
Yes >>Refer to the symptom list and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure(s) as necessary.
No >>Go To 2

2. 5 VOLT OVER VOLTAGE DTC PRESENT
With the DRBIII read Transfer Case DTCs. Record all DTC information.
With the DRBIII erase Transfer Case DTCs.
Start the engine and cycle the Transfer Case Selector Switch through all positions.
With the DRBIII read Transfer Case DTCs.

Does the DRBIII display 5 VOLT OVER VOLTAGE?
Yes >>Go To 3
No >>Go To 9

3. 5 VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE





Turn the ignition off to the lock position.
Disconnect the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C2 harness connector.
Disconnect the Transfer Case Selector Switch harness connector.
Disconnect the Transfer Case Control Module C2 harness connector.

NOTE: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary. Turn the ignition on.

Measure the voltage of the (T322) 5 Volt Selector Switch Supply circuit in the Transfer Case Selector Switch harness connector.
Measure the voltage of the (T313) 5 Volt Mode Sensor Supply circuit in the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C2 harness connector.

Is there any voltage present in the 5 Volt Supply circuit at either connector?
Yes >>Repair the 5 Volt Supply circuit(s) for a short to voltage.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test
No >>Go To 4

4. (T322) 5 VOLT SELECTOR SWITCH SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T315) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL A CIRCUIT





Turn the ignition off to the lock position. Disconnect the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C1 harness connector.

NOTE: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

Measure the resistance between the (T322) 5 Volt Selector Switch Supply circuit in the Transfer Case Selector Switch harness connector and the (T315) Shift Motor Control A circuit in the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms between the 5 Volt Supply circuit and the Shift Motor Control circuit?
Yes >>Repair the 5 Volt Supply circuit for short to the Shift Motor Control circuit.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test
No >>Go To 5

5. (T322) 5 VOLT SELECTOR SWITCH SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T316) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL B CIRCUIT





Measure the resistance between the (T322) 5 Volt Selector Switch Supply circuit in the Transfer Case Selector Switch harness connector and the (T316) Shift Motor Control B circuit in the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms between the 5 Volt Supply circuit and the Shift Motor Control circuit?
Yes >>Repair the 5 Volt Supply circuit for short to the Shift Motor Control circuit.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test
No >>Go To 6

6. (T313) 5 VOLT MODE SENSOR SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T315) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL A CIRCUIT





Measure the resistance between the (T313) 5 Volt Mode Sensor Supply circuit in the Motor/Mode Sensor C2 harness connector and the (T315) Shift Motor Control A circuit in the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms between the 5 Volt Supply circuit and the Shift Motor Control circuit?
Yes >>Repair the 5 Volt Supply circuit for short to the Shift Motor Control circuit.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test
No >>Go To 7

7. (T313) 5 VOLT MODE SENSOR SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (T316) SHIFT MOTOR CONTROL B CIRCUIT





Measure the resistance between the (T313) 5 Volt Mode Sensor Supply circuit in the Motor/Mode Sensor C2 harness connector and the (T316) Shift Motor Control B circuit in the Shift Motor/Mode Sensor C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms between the 5 Volt Supply circuit and the Shift Motor Control circuit?
Yes >>Repair the 5 Volt Supply circuit for short to the Shift Motor Control circuit.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test
No >>Go To 8

8. TRANSFER CASE CONTROL MODULE
Using the wiring diagram as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors relative to this DTC. Inspect all power and ground circuits. Repair as necessary.
If there are no Charging System related DTCs or other possible causes remaining, view repair.

Repair
Replace the Transfer Case Control Module.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test

9. INTERMITTENT WIRING AND CONNECTORS
The conditions necessary to set this DTC are not present at this time.
Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
Wiggle test the wiring harness and connectors while checking for shorted and open circuits.
Using the DRBIII monitor the data related to this circuit while performing the wiggle test. Look for the data to change or for the DTC to reset.

Were there any problems found?
Yes >>Repair as necessary.
Perform TRANSFER CASE VERIFICATION TEST.Transfer Case Verification Test
No >>Test Complete.
