SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Buzzing noise in the right rear wheel area of the car. This noise is caused by fuel cavitation in the rail mounted fuel pump. The condition is more noticeable when the fuel level drops below 1/4 tank. The symptom will be aggravated by high temperatures, high altitudes, and high RVP fuel.

PARTS REQUIRED

Kit PN 4443065 consisting of:

1 In-Tank Pump and Sending Unit PN 4203988
1 Fuel Hose With Convolute Covering PN 4418165
1 Electrical Plug, Dummy PN 2233021
1 Tie Wrap PN 6015756
2 Hose Clamp - 5/16" PN 6500651
1 Hose Clamp - 1/4" PN 6500650

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This corrective action removes both the rail-mounted pump and the in-tank pumps, replacing them with a new single in-tank pump.

1. Per the procedure outlined in the service manual, bleed the injectors to eliminate all residual fuel pressure.

2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and drain the fuel from the tank.

3. Remove and discard the rail-mounted pump. Disconnect the rail pump discharge hose from the fuel filter. Disconnect the rail pump suction hose from the in-tank pump/sending unit.
4. Disconnect the fuel return hose at the in-tank pump. Unhook the 3-pin electrical connector and remove the in-tank pump.

5. Install the new in-tank pump/sending unit, PN 4203988, into the tank.

6. Connect the fuel return hose to the pump and secure with the 1/4" hose clamp, PN 6500650. Torque this clamp to 11 inch pounds.

7. Install the new fuel supply hose, PN 4418165, between the in-tank pump and fuel filter and secure with 5/16" hose clamps, PN 6500651. Torque this clamp to 11 inch pounds.

8. Connect the 3-pin electrical connector to the newly installed pump/sending unit.

9. Connect the dummy 2-pin electrical connector, PN 2233021, to the harness originally connected to the rail-mounted pump. Fold back and secure this pigtail to the main harness using tie wrap, PN 6015756.

10. Fill the fuel tank and start the engine. Check for fuel leaks and road test car to insure problem is corrected.
