Disassembly/Assembly

DISASSEMBLY

1. Remove steering column, refer to Removal/Installation.
2. Remove components in order as they appear, noting the following:
a. If removal of steering lock (4) is necessary, use a hacksaw to cut special bolts at steering lock bracket side.
b. Remove snap ring (5), then remove steering shaft (6) downward.
c. If removal of steering column bracket(s) is necessary, use a hacksaw to cut a groove in head of special bolts, then use a screwdriver to remove steering column bracket(s).
d. On models with Type 2 columns remove clevis pin (15) by first removing snap ring, then tapping out clevis pin from inner side.

INSPECTION

1. Inspect steering shaft for damage and/or deformation.
2. Inspect joints for play, damage and/or binding.
3. Inspect joint bearing for wear and/or damage.
4. Inspect bushing for wear and/or damage.

ASSEMBLY

NOTE: Apply lubricant to surfaces as indicated. Specified lubricant is Mopar Multi-mileage Lubricant part No. 2525035 or equivalent. Assemble components in reverse order as they appear, noting the following:
1. When installing steering column bracket(s), tighten special bolts until bolt heads twist off.
NOTE: New special bolts must be used.
2. Apply suitable drying adhesive to outer circumference of bearing (11) before installing in column tube.
3. Apply a coating of specified lubricant to sliding portion of bearing.
4. Install steering lock (8) as follows:
a. Temporarily install steering lock in alignment with column boss.
b. Ensure lock functions correctly, then tighten special bolts until bolt heads twist off.
NOTE: Steering lock bracket and special bolts must be replaced with new ones when installing steering lock.
