SUBJECT:
Front Suspension Noise



MODELS:
1991-1992 (B2) Colt/Summit


SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit a rattle or metallic sounding noise from the front suspension when the vehicle is driven at moderate speeds over small bumps. This condition may be caused by the top and/or bottom spring coils contacting the adjacent coil when the spring is compressed and released during vehicle operation.


DIAGNOSIS:

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.





2. Inspect the top and bottom spring coils for contact (shiny spots) with the adjacent coil in the areas of the spring as shown in the illustration.


3. If spring contact has occurred, find the color code identification painted on the spring and replace it with a spring with the same color code.

4. If spring contact is not found, inspect the vehicle for other noise sources and repair them as necessary.

1 Coil Spring, Front (Brown Identification Color) MB518796

1 Coil Spring, Front (Brown W/Orange Identification Color) MB672227


REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair procedure involves the replacement of the front coil spring(s).

1. Remove the strut assembly and remove the coil spring as described in the applicable Colt/Summit Service Manual.

2. Install the new coil spring in the strut assembly and install the strut assembly as described in the applicable Colt/Summit Service Manual.
