Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

A. Replace Door Latch Switches

IMPORTANT:
Colt/Summit 2-door models built after November 20, 1992 (MDH 1120XX), involved in Phase Two (2) of this recall (7282) DO NOT require door latch switch replacement. For those vehicles, continue with Section B.

1. Remove the driver's door pull handle or armrest (Figure 1).

2. Remove the inside door handle cover (Figure 1).

3. For vehicles with manual windows: Remove the window regulator handle clip using a rag (Figure 2) and then remove the handle and escutcheon.

4. For vehicles with power windows: Remove the power window/lock switch assembly. Use a trim stick to release the clips at the front of the assembly (Figure 3).

5. Remove the door trim panel (Figure 1).

6. Remove the inside door handle (Figure 1).

7. Remove the pull handle bracket, if equipped (Figure 1).

8. Remove the waterproof film (Figure 1).

9. Remove the inside door handle rod (Figure 4).

10. Remove the inside door lock knob (4-door/wagon) or inside door lock rod (2-door).

11. Remove the door glass run (Figure 4).

12. Remove the outer door handle fasteners (Figure 4)

13. Remove the lock cylinder from the outside door handle (Figure 4).

14. Remove the outside door handle and disconnect the link rod (Figure 4).

15. Remove the door latch attaching screws and the power lock actuator attaching screw (if equipped) (Figure 4).

16. Disconnect the shoulder belt switch and power lock module (if equipped) electrical connector(s) (Figure 4).

17. Remove the door latch and power lock actuator (if equipped) as an assembly (Figure 4).

18. Inspect the door latch date code

(Figure 5).

^ If the date code is 2Z (December 1992) or later, the latch has been replaced previously and does not require switch replacement. Continue with Step 25.

^ If the date code is 2Y (November 1992) or earlier the latch switch must be replaced. Continue with Step 19.

19. Remove the two (2) switch rivets as follows:

A. Drill the head from the rivets on the metal bracket side of the latch assembly using a 3/16(5 mm) drill bit (Figure 6).

B. Using a small punch or the provided tool, and a hammer lightly tap the rivets out just far enough to be able to get side cutters or a similar tool under the rivet head (Figure 7).

CAUTION:
The back side of the latch is plastic. Do NOT use excessive force or the latch will break.

C. Remove the rivets from the plastic side of the latch using the side cutters (Figure 7).

20. Cut the tie wrap(s) from the switch harness, then remove the switch from the latch assembly (Figure 8).

21. Install the new switch into the latch opening (Figure 8).

IMPORTANT:
Install the new switch with the open side of the switch contact facing away from the latch striker opening.

22. Secure the switch by installing two of the provided rivets through the latch and switch from the metal bracket side and then pinching the ends with pliers (Figure 9).

23. Route the switch wiring harness tight along the latch body, insert it into the latch clip and secure it with the provided tie wrap(s). Cut off the free end of the tie wrap(s).

24. Check the shoulder belt switch continuity at the switch electrical connector as follows (Figure 10):

A. With the door latch in the open position, there should be continuity between the BLACK and RED wires.

B. With the door latch in the secondary latch position (center), there should be continuity between the BLACK and RED wires.

C. With the door latch in the closed position, there should be continuity between the BLACK and GREEN wires.

25. Loosely install the door latch and power lock actuator (if equipped) assembly (Figure 4).

26. Loosely install the outer door handle (Figure 4).

27. Install the lock cylinder into the outer door handle (Figure 4).

28. Connect the shoulder belt switch and power lock (if equipped) electrical connector(s) (Figure 4).

29. Tighten the outer door handle fasteners (Figure 4).

30. Tighten the latch assembly attaching bolts to 53 in-lbs (6 N.m) (Figure 4).

31. Install the rear door glass run (Figure 4).

32. Install the inside door lock knob or inside door lock rod (Figure 4).

33. Install the inside door handle link rod (Figure 4).

34. Install the waterproof film (Figure 1).

35. Install the pull handle bracket, if equipped (Figure 1).

36. Install the inside door handle (Figure 1).

37. Install the door trim panel (Figure 1).

38. For vehicles with power windows: Install the power window/lock switch assembly (Figure 3).

39. For vehicles with manual windows: Install the window regulator escutcheon and handle. Fully close the door glass, reorient the handle to the position shown (if necessary) and then install the handle clip (Figure 11).

40. Install the inside door handle cover (Figure 1).

41. Install the driver's door pull handle or armrest (Figure 1).

42. Repeat Steps I through 41 for the passenger door.

43. If the vehicle is a Colt or Summit 2-door model, continue with Section B. If it is a Colt or Summit 4-door, Colt Vista Wagon or Summit Wagon, no further action is necessary.
