Idle Speed: Adjustments

NOTE: Idle speed is set at the factory and readjustment should be unnecessary. Before adjusting basic idle speed confirm that the ignition system, the Idle Speed Control Servo, the fuel injectors and the engine compression are all normal and within specification.

CAUTION: Improper setting of the throttle valve opening will increase exhaust gas temperatures at deceleration, which will greatly reduce the life of the Catalytic Converter. Also, fuel consumption and engine braking will be affected.

CONDITIONS FOR ADJUSTMENT

1. Engine coolant temperature has reached 85-95°C (185-205°F)
2. Lights, engine cooling fan, and electrical accessories are OFF
3. Transaxle is in Neutral (N) or Park (P)
4. Steering wheel is at a center position (power steering equipped)
5. Parking brake is applied.

CHECKING IDLE

1. Verify that the ignition timing is set to specifications.

Before checking or adjusting idle speed, be sure:
Engine coolant temperature is at operating temperature, 85-95°C (185-195°F)
Lights, electrical accessories, and cooling fan are OFF
Transaxle is in Park or Neutral
Front wheels are pointing straight ahead
Parking brake is set

Engine Speed Check Connector With Paper Clip Inserted:

Tachometer Connection:

1. Connect a tachometer. If using a primary current pulse detection type tachometer, insert a paper clip into the back side of the 1-pin harness connector, as shown above, then connect a tachometer to the paper clip.
DO NOT disconnect the electrical connector.

CAUTION: If the paper clip is inserted incorrectly, it may become caught and cannot be remove without damaging the connector.

3. With the engine stopped, ground the diagnosis control terminal (Fig. 1).

4. With the engine stopped, remove the waterproof female connector from the ignition timing adjustment terminal, located in the engine compartment. Ground the terminal using a lead wire with alligator clips (Fig. 2).

5. Start and run the engine at idle. Check the basic idle speed.

Basic Idle Adjustment Screw:

7. If idle speed is not within specification, adjust by turning the Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS).
7. If idle speed cannot be adjusted within specification by turning the Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS), inspect the fixed Speed Adjusting Screw (fixed SAS).

8. Stop the engine. Disconnect the lead wire from the ignition timing adjustment connector and remove the tachometer and the paper clip.

9. Start and run the engine at idle.
