EGR Valve: Testing and Inspection

EGR Valve Inspection:






1. Connect the vacuum pump directly to the EGR valve.
2. Using the vacuum pump apply 8.5 in. Hg (215 mm Hg) of vacuum while the engine is at idle and verify that idle becomes unstable.
If the idle speed does not respond, the EGR valve may defective or the EGR passage may be restricted.
3. Turn the key to the OFF position. If The valve failed step 2, proceed to steps 4 through 9.






4. Remove the EGR valve and check it for sticking, carbon deposits, etc. If necessary clean the EGR valve with a suitable solvent.
5. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the EGR valve.
6. Apply a vacuum of 500mm Hg or 19.6 in. Hg and verify that the diaphragm chamber is leak tight.
7. Apply 45 mm Hg or 1.7 in. Hg of vacuum to the valve and verify that air does not pass through the EGR valve.
8. Increase vacuum to 215 mm Hg or 8.5 in. Hg and verify that air will pass through the EGR valve.
9. Re-install the EGR valve when testing is complete and tighten the mounting bolts to 15 - 22 Nm or 10 - 15 ft. lbs.
