Service Procedure For Manual A/C Systems
1. Latch the gearshift selector lever in "P" (Park) for automatic transmission equipped vehicles, or shift into "N" (Neutral) for manual transmission equipped vehicles. Fully set the parking brake and place wood blocks (4" x 4" size, or larger,) at the front and rear of each tire. Cover front and rear seats.WARNING: UNEXPECTED AND POSSIBLY SUDDEN VEHICLE MOVEMENT MAY OCCUR IF THESE PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.
2. Check ALL A/C system condensate drains for obstructions. Any obstructions must be eliminated before proceeding.
3. With vehicle engine turned off, disconnect the electrical connector at the A/C clutch. If electrical connector is hard to reach, disconnect pressure switch at suction/accumulator.
NOTE: It will be necessary to operate vehicle engine during this procedure to provide a source of vacuum required by some A/C control systems and to prevent battery drain.
WARNING: ONLY OPERATE THE ENGINE IN A WELLVENTILATED AREA TO AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING.
4. Carefully read the following cautions for the Disinfectant Part A, Disinfectant Part B, and their mixture.
Keep out of reach of children.
WARNING - HAZARDS TO HUMANS:
Causes eye irritation. Wear safety goggles during mixing and application to avoid contact with eyes. Can cause respiratory irritation. Wear a NIOSH approved acid gas/organic vapor respirator with dust/mist pre-filter according to instructions, to avoid inhalation during application. Disinfectant may bleach clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
FIRST AID: If in eyes, flush eyes with plenty of water. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. For both conditions, seek medical attention if irritation persists.
STORAGE AND DISPOSAL: Store in cool place in original containers. Always replace caps. Keep upright. Wash empty containers thoroughly and discard in a safe place. Do not reuse empty containers.
5. To prepare disinfectant for use, add all of the container labeled "Motorcraft A/C System Disinfectant Part B" to the larger container labeled "A/C System Disinfectant Part A". To mix completely, replace cap and gently turn container over once or twice. Pour the disinfectant mixture into the fluid container of the Dirkes Industries Spray Unit, Model No. 3366 or Rotunda Model # 134-00055. Set the air supply regulator between 40 and 45 psi.
6. Start engine. Set A/C system controls to the lowest blower speed (blower off if A/C system will permit), panel airflow, (MAX A/C or NORM A/C), and temperature control set at the midpoint between "cool" and "warm".
Spray the disinfectant into the A/C system through each defroster, side window demister, panel register, and floor duct opening for 5 to 10 seconds per opening.
NOTE: Figures shown are examples of different control heads used in Ford products; not all vehicle lines are shown.
7. Repeat Step 6 with the A/C system still at the lowest blower speed but set for floor airflow (HEAT or FLOOR).
8. Repeat Step 6 with the A/C system still at the lowest blower speed but set for defrost airflow.
9. With A/C system still set for defrost airflow spray the exposed surface of the outside/recirculating door for 5 to 10 seconds.
10. Turn the A/C system on at high blower; set for panel air with recirculating inside airflow (MAX A/C). Spray the remainder of the disinfectant into the recirculate air inlet. Point disinfectant spray toward center of blower wheel if visible; otherwise, direct spray toward center of airflow path. All of the disinfectant must be used for maximum effectiveness.
CAUTION: Check the drain frequently to make sure the disinfectant is not collecting inside the evaporator core.
NOTE: For vehicles which have limited access to the recirculate air inlet opening an alternate method may be used. Set the system for panel air with outside airflow (NORM A/C). Spray the remainder of the disinfectant into the A/C system through the outside air inlet opening at the cowl. Point disinfectant spray toward center of blower wheel if visible; otherwise, direct spray toward center of airflow path.
IMPORTANT!
Spray liquid until fluid container is completely empty. After fluid container is empty, raise fluid hose to maintain a solid column of liquid. Continue to raise fluid hose forcing the fluid through the spray nozzle. This will use all of the material and only a minimum of residue will remain in the fluid hose.
11. While the vehicle's A/C system is soaking, clean the spray unit with tap water to remove any residual disinfectant from the spray fluid container and hoses. Wear safety goggles when cleaning the spray unit.
To Clean: With spray unit off, pour 1 to 2 ounces of tap water into fluid container. Cover hole in cap with thumb and shake container. Turn spray unit on and spray through nozzle to flush system.
The easiest and best way to have a good working spray unit is to keep it clean.
Do not take the spray nozzle apart unless absolutely necessary. If clogged, follow the directions included with the spray unit for disassembly.
12. With the spray unit off, fill the spray units fluid container with tap water. Set the air supply regulator between 40 and 45 psi.
13. Set A/C system at the lowest blower speed (blower off if system will permit), and panel airflow to (MAX A/C or NORM A/C). Spray the tap water rinse into each defroster, side window demister, panel register, and floor duct opening for 1 to 5 seconds each.
14. Repeat Step 15 with the A/C system still at the lowest blower speed but set for floor airflow (HEAT or FLOOR).
15. Repeat Step 15 with the A/C system still at the lowest blower speed but set for defrost airflow.
16. With A/C system still set for defrost airflow spray the exposed surface of the outside/recirculating door for 1 to 5 seconds.
17. Set the A/C system at the high blower speed and panel air with recirculating airflow (MAX A/C). Spray the remainder of the rinse water into the recirculate air inlet. Point water spray toward center of blower wheel if visible; otherwide, direct spray toward center of airflow path. All of the water rinse must be used for maximum effectiveness.
NOTE: It may be necessary to spray the rinse water into the A/C system through the outside air inlet opening at the cowl, Stop 10. Spray rinse water toward center of blower wheel if visible; otherwise, direct spray toward center of airflow path.
18. With the engine off, reconnect the electrical connector at the A/C clutch or reconnect the pressure switch at the suction/accumulator.
19. Dry the spray unit by continuing to spray air.
