This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1988-1991 F250/350 trucks over 8500 lb GVW.

Safety Defect
In certain extremely severe driving conditions, the vehicle may experience a loss of front brake effectiveness due to overheating of brake fluid. These vehicles have a split brake system and the rear brakes remain operational.

This condition has been reported primarily in vehicles operated in mountainous regions, and on vehicles that have been in service for a minimum of one to two years and where the brake fluid has absorbed moisture from the air, lowering its boiling point. It usually involves heavily loaded vehicles driving on long, steep grades, or when towing at, or near, the Maximum Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) for towing. Warm weather also appears to contribute to this condition.

REMINDER - Make sure your truck is properly maintained. When driving on steep grades, avoid "riding the brakes" and downshift the transmission to a lower gear to control speed. Follow towing instructions in the owner guide to make sure you do not exceed the GCWR during normal operation. Additionally, trailer brakes should be inspected to be sure that they are properly connected to the vehicle and are working properly.

Repairs
At no cost to you, your dealer will install insulators in the front brake caliper pistons on all the affected trucks. Dealers will also install insulator jackets around selected portions of the front brake tubes on trucks equipped with 7.5L EFI engines.

How long will it take?
The time needed to repair your truck is less than two hours. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your vehicle for one full working day.

Call your dealer
Call your dealer without delay. Ask for a service date and if parts are in stock.

If your dealer does not have the parts in stock, they can be ordered before scheduling your service date. Parts would be expected to arrive within a week.

When you bring your truck in, give the dealer this letter.

If you misplace this letter, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.

Changed address or sold the truck?
If you have, please fill out enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us.

If the dealer doesn't make the repair promptly and without charge, you may contact the Ford Customer Assistance Center, 300 Renaissance Center, P. 0. Box 43360, Detroit, Michigan 48243. You also may send a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline 1-800-424-9393 (Washington D.C. area residents may call 366-0123).

We regret the inconvenience this service may cause you, but we want you to have the work done for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built truck.
