Electronic Component Handling

STATIC DISCHARGE

1. Discharge any static electrical charges before handling electronic parts by touching ground or maintaining a ground connection to a bare skin area like the wrist.
2. Never touch the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector pins, integrated circuit connector pins, or soldered components on the PCM circuit board.

TESTING

1. When measuring voltage at the PCM harness connector, disconnect harness connector with the ignition OFF, then turn ignition "ON" as necessary.
2. To prevent deforming PCM harness connectors, do not probe terminals directly. Instead, insert a pin from the harness side and perform measurements through pin.

ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT DAMAGE

1. Do not try to disassemble any PCM.
2. Before performing electrical welding (for instance, spot welding), disconnect the battery, climate control, cruise control, PCM and radio.
3. If temperatures may exceed 176°F (80°C), (example: infra-red spray booth), remove all PCM's.
4. Avoid getting water on any of the Fuel and Electronic Control System Components.
5. Never apply battery power to a component unless directed to do so in a test procedure.
