Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Description and Operation

AIR INTAKE SYSTEM

Air Cleaner And Fresh Air Duct:

Purpose
The purpose of the air intake system is to filter air and deliver it to the engine.

Operation
Fresh air is drawn through ducting, to the air filter and into the intake manifold. The intake manifold distributes the air to the combustion chamber where it is compressed.

FUEL SYSTEM

Fuel Flow:

Purpose
The fuel system takes the fuel from the tank and delivers it to the cylinders to be burned.

Operation
Fuel is drawn from the fuel tank by the fuel supply pump and routed to the combination fuel filter/water separator and to the injection pump. The injection pump pressurizes the fuel and delivers it to the injection nozzles at the proper time and in the proper quantity.

The fuel injection lines are designed so fuel travels the same distance between the pump and injectors for each cylinder. This maintains accurate pressure and timing for all the injectors. Excess fuel from the injection pump and injectors is routed back to the fuel tank by return fuel lines.

Construction
The fuel system consists of the fuel supply pump, fuel injection pump, fuel supply and return lines, injection lines, in-line pressure sensor, and fuel filter/heater/water separator.
