Disassembly and Assembly


DISASSEMBLY







1. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool from the camshaft.

NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified.







2. Install the Valve Spring Spacer between the valve spring coils to prevent valve stem seal damage.

CAUTION: Do not remove the camshaft before removing the roller followers. Place cylinder head on a cardboard or wood surface to prevent damage to the joint face.







3. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs, and remove the roller followers.







4. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.







5. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs.







6. Remove the (A) valve spring retainer keys, the (B) valve spring retainers, the (C) valve springs, and the valves.


CAUTION: Keep valves and valve spring retainer keys in order so they can be installed in the same positions.


NOTE: Shown without camshaft for clarity.







7. Remove the valve stem seals.







8. Remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts, the bearing caps and the camshaft.

ASSEMBLY
1. Use a plastic scraper and solvent to clean the cylinder head.
^ Use Metal Surface CleanerF4A3-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-MSB392-A.

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers or other tools to clean the cylinder head.







2. Lubricate the camshaft journals.
^ Use SAE 50W engine oil meeting Ford specification WSE-M2C908-A1.







3. Install the camshaft and the camshaft bearing caps.
^ Lubricate and position the camshaft bearing caps.
^ Use SAE 50W engine oil meeting Ford specification WSE-M2C908-A1.
^ Install the camshaft bearing cap bolts loosely.







4. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown.







5. Install the valves in the valve guides located in the cylinder head.







6. Use the (A) Valve Stem Seal Replacer to install the (B) valve stem seals.







7. Install the valve springs and the valve spring retainers onto the valves.







8. Install the Valve Spring Spacer between the valve spring coils to prevent valve stem seal damage.







9. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs, and install the valve spring retainer keys.







10. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.







11. Install the roller followers.







12. Remove the Valve Spring Spacer.
