Continuous Memory DTC Access

Continuous Memory Self-Test
The purpose of this mode is to enable the scan tool to obtain stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). All scan tools (New Generation STAR [NGS] and generic) are capable of obtaining, converting and displaying On Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) emission-related DTCs from a vehicle. These DTCs are transmitted in response to an OBD II Mode 03 request. Specific menu access to emission-related DTCs (Malfunction Indicator Lamp [MIL] only) is determined by the scan tool manufacturer. Most vehicles also support OBD II Mode 07 request for pending MIL DTCs. The purpose of this mode is to assist in repair verification by reporting a pending DTC after one drive cycle. The pending DTC does not necessarily indicate a damaged component or system. If the test indicates a failure after additional driving, then the MIL will illuminate and a DTC will be set and reported with OBD II Mode 03, Emission Related Continuous Memory DTCs access.

Accessing Emission-Related Continuous Memory DTCs
Emission-related DTC retrieval (Mode 03) can easily be performed by any OBD II generic scan tool without the need to enter any specific character strings. The specific instructions to retrieve and display emission-related Continuous Memory DTCs will depend on the scan tool manufacturer. DTC retrieval is conducted with the key ON and the engine OFF or running.

Accessing Emission-Related Pending Continuous Memory DTCs
Emission-related pending DTC retrieval (Mode 07) can easily be performed by any OBD II generic scan tool, without the need to enter any specific expanded diagnostic protocol character strings. The specific instructions to retrieve and display pending emission-related Continuous Memory DTCs will depend on the individual scan tool manufacturer.

Accessing All Continuous Memory DTCs Using A Generic Scan Tool
With some generic scan tools, a string of characters must be entered to access all powertrain Continuous DTCs. The generic keystroke entry for this specific function is provided below. Also, refer to the scan tool manufacturer's instructions for additional information.

- Enter the following string to retrieve all Continuous DTCs:

- 09,2A,21,C41013,,9E00445443287329208B44,6F

The scan tool will display all Continuous DTCs.
