OBD II Drive Cycle
Once started, the engine must not be turned off during the OBD II Drive Cycle. A strict observance of posted speed limits is required for a safe completion of the drive cycle.NOTE: For the 5.4L/6.8L E-Series applications only, perform Step 2 before Step 1 of the following OBD II Drive Cycle.
Start the engine and drive the vehicle:
1. Drive in stop-and-go traffic for 20 minutes with at least 4 idle periods. One acceleration at more than 1/2 throttle is necessary on the Escort/Tracer and Probe applications.
2. Drive on expressway or highway for 10 to 15 minutes. Access and monitor the IAT PID on the scan tool during the entire highway drive. Heavy accelerations, sudden decelerations or wide open throttles are not recommended on any vehicle.
NOTE: If the IAT PID is less than 4°C (40°F) at any time during the highway drive, the Evaporative Emission Monitor will not complete.
3. Access the On-Board Readiness Menu on the scan tool to check monitor completion status.
4. Rerun Continuous Memory Self-Test to check code P1000 status. Refer to Diagnostic Subroutines / DSR 6. Quick Test
5. If the Evaporative Emission Monitor on Taurus/Sable, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, Town Car, Mark VIII, Explorer/Mountaineer, Windstar, 4.2L/4.6L/5.4L F-Series/E-Series, 4.6L/5.4L Expedition, and 6.8L E-Series is the only monitor not showing completion status on the scan tool and the P1000 is cleared, the OBD II Drive Cycle is completed.
