Air Cleaner Component Location - Typical

The intake air system consists of the following components:
- Air Cleaner (ACL), inlet and outlet
- Air Cleaner Element (ACL element)
- Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF).
- air cleaner outlet tube
- control sensor extension wiring
- intake air resonator (diesel engine)
- air cleaner element restriction gauge (diesel engine)

7.3L DIESEL ENGINE
The air intake system consists of the following components:
- air cleaner
- air cleaner element
- mass air flow sensor^ air cleaner outlet tube
- control sensor extension wiring
- intake air resonator
- air cleaner element restrictor gauge

Air Cleaner Assembly - 7.3L Diesel Engine:

The air cleaner contains an air cleaner element made of treated, pleated paper, which must be replaced periodically as scheduled. Engine performance and fuel economy are adversely affected when maximum restriction of the air cleaner element is reached.

NOTE: Replace the diesel air cleaner element when the yellow band in the restriction gauge reaches the change filter mark.

After replacing the diesel air cleaner element, reset the restriction gauge by pushing the button on the end of the indicator.

Variable Resonance Induction System
The variable resonance induction system is used on the 4.6L and 5.4L engines only. A solenoid-operated shutter valve is located in the dynamic chamber of the variable resonance induction system in the lower intake manifold. The variable resonance induction system opens and closes the shutter according to the engine speed and throttle opening angle to improve the charging efficiency by using the pressure waves of the intake air. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) applies voltage to the variable resonance induction system solenoid, and actuates and moves the shutter valve.
