Subframe: Description and Operation

FRAME ASSEMBLY

The subframe is bolted to the body and:
- aids in structural support.
- provides the mounting surface for the steering gear, front suspension lower control arms, front engine support bracket, transmission support insulator and stabilizer control arms.
- provides the mounting surface for the rear suspension upper and lower control arms, rear exhaust hanger and (if equipped) a mounting location for the rear differential.

Unibody misalignment can affect both the front and the rear wheel alignment, the operation of the suspension parts and the drivetrain operation. In a unibody vehicle, every structural member and outer panel is designed to offer the maximum protection in the event of a collision. The rear subframe is bolted to the body.
