Removal





Special Tool(s)

Removal

1. CAUTION: The air suspension switch must be turned off prior to raising the vehicle. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which could result in shifting of the vehicle during the repair operation.

If equipped, turn the air suspension switch off.
2. Remove the intake manifold.





3. Remove the hood.





4. Remove the engine Air Cleaner (ACL) and reposition it to gain access to the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.





5. Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector and remove the ACL.
6. Remove the radiator.
7. Remove the A/C condenser core.





8. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connectors.





9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector.





10. Remove the bolts and the PCM.





11. Remove the PCM mounting bracket.





12. Remove the bolt and disconnect the ground wire.





13. Use the Heater Hose Inlet Tube Remover to disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.





14. Disconnect the evaporator tubes from the manifold.





15. Disconnect the evaporator tubes from the evaporator.
16. Remove the cable routing bracket from the heater outlet tube mounting studs.





17. Release the wiring retainers from the heater outlet tube bracket.
1 Release the knock sensor electrical connector retainer. 5.4L only.
2 Release the engine harness routing clip.





18. Disconnect the hoses from the heater outlet tube.





19. Loosen the upper (outboard) heater outlet tube stud and remove the lower stud.





20. Remove the heater outlet tube and discard the O-ring seal.





21. Release the wiring harness retainer from the front cover stud.





22. Disconnect the generator electrical connections and remove the generator.





23. Remove the bolts and position the power steering reservoir aside.





24. Remove the nuts and disconnect the transmission cooler tube and the power steering hose brackets.





25. Using the special tool, remove the power steering pump pulley.





26. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose.
^ Drain the power steering fluid into a suitable container.





27. Remove the three bolts and position the power steering pump aside.
28. Raise and support the vehicle.





29. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch electrical connector.





30. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.





31. Remove the oil filter.





32. Disconnect the lower radiator hose and the degas bottle hose from the oil filter adapter.





33. Disconnect the exhaust manifold to EGR valve tube lower fitting and remove the tube.





34. Detach the wiring harness retainer and disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.





35. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.





36. Remove the fasteners and position the A/C compressor aside.





37. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness bracket.
38. Remove the starter motor.





39. NOTE: The bolt is accessed through the RH fender well.

Remove the transmission fluid filler tube bolt.





40. NOTE: RH side shown, LH side similar.

Disconnect the two Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.





41. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.

Remove the RH and LH exhaust manifold to dual converter Y-pipe nuts.
^ Detach the dual converter Y-pipe.

42. Remove the RH exhaust manifold-to-dual converter Y-pipe studs.





43. Disconnect the shift cable and remove the shift cable bracket.





44. Remove the bolts and the flexplate inspection cover.





45. Remove the cylinder block opening cover.





46. Remove the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Discard the nuts.





47. NOTE: The upper two transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later.

Remove the lower five transmission-to-engine bolts.





48. Remove the RH engine mount nut.





49. NOTE: The caged nut on the frame may break during bolt removal. If necessary, install a new nut.

Remove the LH engine mount through bolt.
50. Lower the vehicle.
51. Support the transmission.

52. NOTE: On 4x4 vehicles, it may be necessary to reposition the transfer case vent hose to access the bolts.

Remove the upper two transmission-to-engine bolts and the wiring harness bracket.





53. NOTE: On some engines it will be necessary to shim between the tool mounting brackets and the cylinder block.

Install the special tool.
54. Remove the engine.
