BALL JOINT INSPECTION

NOTE:
- Make sure to inspect the wheel bearings for looseness prior to inspecting the ball joints.
- Do not use a prying device when checking for ball joint wear or damage. Check the ball joints using hand force, checking for inward and outward movement only.

1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.

3. Check and, if necessary, adjust the front wheel bearings.

4. When checking the lower ball joint, install the Tire and Wheel Run-Out Gauge Set (164-R2724 or equivalent) positioning the dial indicator against the spindle housing. Have an assistant grasp the tire at the bottom and move it inward and outward while observing and recording the movement.
5. When checking the upper ball joint, install the Tire and Wheel Run-Out Gauge Set (164-R2724 or equivalent) positioning the dial indicator against the spindle housing. Have an assistant grasp the tire at the top and move it inward and outward while observing and recording the movement.
6. If the movement exceeds 0.8 mm (1/32 in.), install a new ball joint.
