Pinpoint Test AC: The Family Entertainment System Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 130, Audio System/Navigation for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) routes audio signals to the Audio Control Module (ACM). In single-play mode, the ACM plays the DVD audio on all speakers. In dual-play mode, the audio to the rear speakers is muted and the RETM continues to control the rear audio source to the headphones.

If the vehicle is equipped with the SYNC system, the audio signals from the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) are routed through the RETM to the ACM. This allows for single-play and dual-play to include SYNC system audio sources.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Incorrect customer setting
- Damaged DVD
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- RETM
- ACM

PINPOINT TEST AC: THE FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Before diagnosing the family entertainment system, make sure a known good DVD is installed.

-------------------------------------------------
AC1 CHECK FOR LOST COMMUNICATION DTCs

- Retrieve the continuous DTCs from all modules.
- Is DTC U0184, U0184:00, U0196, or U0196:00 set in any audio system module?

Yes
REFER to DTC Charts. [1][2]Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions

No
GO to AC2.

-------------------------------------------------
AC2 IDENTIFY THE SYMPTOM

- Operate the audio system in DVD single-play mode and observe the DVD audio. Refer to the Owner's Literature.
- Does the DVD audio operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AC3.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with the SYNC system, GO to AC4.

Otherwise, GO to AC5.

-------------------------------------------------
AC3 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DVD VIDEO

- Operate the audio system in DVD single-play mode and observe the DVD audio.
- Does the DVD video operate correctly?

Yes
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern was either caused by an incorrect system setting, or the customer using a damaged DVD. INFORM the customer that pressing the power button or the VIDEO button while a DVD is playing can cause the display to go blank.

No
GO to AC7.

-------------------------------------------------
AC4 CHECK THE RETM AUDIO PASS-THROUGH

- Connect a known good device to either the audio input jack, the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, or through the Bluetooth connection. Refer to the Owners's Literature.
- Operate the audio system in SYNC mode.
- Does the SYNC system audio operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AC7.

No
GO to AC5.

-------------------------------------------------
AC5 CHECK THE AUDIO CIRCUITS TO THE ACM FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: RETM C9029.
- Disconnect: ACM C240c.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the ACM, harness side and ground as follows:

- Is any voltage present?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to AC6.

-------------------------------------------------
AC6 CHECK THE AUDIO CIRCUITS TO THE ACM FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND

- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between the ACM, harness side and the APIM, harness side; and between the ACM, harness side and ground as follows:

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the ACM and the RETM, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the ACM and ground?

Yes
GO to AC7.

No
REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
AC7 CHECK FOR CORRECT RETM OPERATION

- Connect: ACM C240c.
- Disconnect the RETM connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the RETM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new RETM. REFER to Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) Rear Entertainment Module (RETM). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
