Intake Air Distribution and Filtering

Intake Air Distribution and Filtering

The gasoline and diesel engine intake air system consists of the following:

- Air Cleaner (ACL)
- ACL element
- ACL cover
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- ACL outlet pipe

The diesel engine intake air system adds the following:

- Engine Charge Air Cooler (CAC)
- CAC tubes (inlet and outlet)
- CAC clamps
- Primary fresh air inlet
- Secondary fresh air inlet (with foam filter element)
- Restriction gauge

The engine intake air system:

- cleans intake air with a replaceable ACL element.
- measures airflow and intake air temperature with a MAF sensor.

NOTICE: Do not use silicone based sprays or lubricants on any components installed onto or around the diesel exhaust system or intake air distribution and filtering system. Silicone reacts with the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) sensor and may cause permanent damage to the NOx sensor.

NOTICE: Blowing out the air filter element with compressed air is not recommended. Compressed air may damage the filter paper.

The engine ACL contains an ACL element made of treated and pleated paper. A new ACL element must be installed periodically as scheduled or indicated by the restriction gauge (6.7L diesel). Engine performance and fuel economy are adversely affected when maximum restriction of the ACL element is reached.

NOTICE: Do not use ultrasonic cleaning equipment on the Charge Air Cooler (CAC). Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the CAC and contamination of the engine intake airstream.

On diesel applications, the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) subsystem cools and increases the density of the compressed air charge by transferring the heat from the air charge to the secondary cooling system.
