Conical Seat Spark Plugs -Service Precautions

Bulletin No. 81-16

Article No. 81-16-4

Date: August 10, 1981

SUBJECT;
ENGINE - CONICAL SEAT SPARK PLUGS

FORD;
1982 ESCORT WITH 1.6L ENGINE

LINCOLN MERCURY;
1982 LYNX WITH 1.6L ENGINE

The 1982 Escort/Lynx 1.6L engine is fitted with conical seat type spark plugs that require lower installation torque than the 1981 engines that use gasket type plugs.

1981 - AGSP32 17-22 lbs-ft (gasket type)
1982 - AWSF32 10-15 lbs-ft (conical seat type)

NOTE: The two plug types are not interchangeable. The 1982 plug (AWSF32) has fewer threads and cannot be used to service the 1981 engines.

When changing spark plugs in an Escort/Lynx, be sure to check the following:

1. Vehicle Code Number: to determine which model year is involved.

2. Engine Emission Decal: to check the spark plug type number against the model year and confirm proper gap.

3. Plug type being removed: to confirm that the removed plugs match the plug type numbers from Steps 1 and 2.

NOTE: The EXP/LN7 in current production is not affected by this change and still use the gasket type spark plug (AGSP32) until further notice.
