An engine overheating condition may be caused by blockage of the upper cooling passage in the crankcase (Figure 27). To check for blockage, perform the following steps:

^ Remove the thermostat, thermostat housing and temperature sending unit from the crankcase.
^ Using a flexible 18 inch long wire, probe the cooling passage from either the thermostat opening or temperature sending unit opening.
^ If the wire strikes an obstruction, the passageway is blocked. If the wire goes through, the passageway is open.
In most cases the obstruction can be removed by hitting it with a punch. It may be necessary to remove the heads to do this.

However, should the obstructions be too thick to break, replace the block assembly.
