In order to ensure a correct dynamic injection timing set, the dynamic timing meter, Tool No. 078-00100, should be calibrated periodically. The following procedure shows the proper method for calibrating the meter.
1. With the engine off, connect the battery clamps.
Figure 17:
2. Rotate the offset angle control knob clockwise until it stops (Figure 17). The reading on the degree scale should be -170~ or greater.
3. Rotate the offset angle control knob counterclockwise until it stops. The reading on the degree scale should be 0~ or a positive number.
4. If the readings are not within the specifications noted in Steps 2 and 3, send the timing meter to your local Sun Electric Service Center for service.
5. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is maintained.
Figure 18:
6. Stop the engine and insert the magnetic pickup in the timing pointer probe hole (Figure 18). Set the timing meter to a minus (-) 20~ and install the luminosity probe in No. 1 cylinder. Make sure that the sight glass in the luminosity probe is clean.
Figure 19:
7. Proceed with setting timing to prescribed specifications (Figure 19). Be sure to use Cetane Value Test, Tool No. 078-00121. Cetane value should be measured to determine the correct specification that the injection timing should be set at.
When setting the dynamic timing, it is very important that all of the degree readings show minus(-) indicating ATDC (after top dead center), on the timing meter. Any plus (+) readings, indicating BTDC (before top dead center), will cause poor engine performance and may eventually cause engine damage.
