PISTON(S) SEIZED OR ROD(S) BENT BECAUSE OF WATER ENTRY
LIGHT TRUCK 1983-86 F-250/350
ISSUE: Reduced engine power or engine seizure may occur when driving through shallow streams or during heavy downpours. This condition may be caused by the engine air inlet system picking up water. Under severe conditions and reduced engine RPM, hydrostatic lock-up occurs within the cylinder(s) possibly resulting in engine damage. In less extreme cases there may be a loss of engine power due to bent connecting rods and a reduction of engine compression ratios.
Figure 41:
ACTION: To prevent water entry, install a new air cleaner assembly (E7TZ-9600-A) featuring a water drain system with an internal baffle and a water resistant element (E7TZ-9601-A), see Figure 41. A drain hose (E7TZ09F765- A) which is included as part of the new air cleaner assembly is also available for service. Use the following procedure.
1. Disconnect the flex hose from the air cleaner tray.
2. Remove the air cleaner wing bolt.
3. Lift and remove the entire air cleaner assembly as a unit.
CAUTION: If the air cleaner assembly is not removed as a unit, contamination (internal to the engine) could result in engine damage.
4. Be sure that the rubber gasket seal between the air cleaner and intake manifold is removed with the air cleaner.
5. Install the new air cleaner assembly being certain that the new seal, attached to the assembly, is in place.
6. Check to see that the air cleaner drain hose is hanging freely behind the engine (not doubled under between the air cleaner tray and intake manifold or trapped behind the kickdown rod on automatic transmission equipped vehicles). Failure to do so could result in the system not rejecting water.
7. Tighten the wing bolt.
8. Connect the flex hose to the new air cleaner tray.
CAUTION: The old element should NEVER be used with the new air cleaner assembly or vice versa. Such actions could result in a greater chance of engine damage due to water ingestion.
