Air Cleaner/EGR - Poor Cold Wide Open Performance

PERFORMANCE POOR (2.8L) - COLD AMBIENT OPERATION (BELOW 40~ F)
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-84 RANGER AND BRONCO II
CALIBRATIONS: 4-61F-R00; R10, 4-61G-R00, 4-61K-R01, 4-62D-R00; R10, 4-62S-R14
Low power on wide open throttle acceleration in temperatures below 40~ F could be caused by excessive air cleaner restriction when the air cleaner duct and valve are in the heated air position. The procedure listed below will help minimize the concern.
1. Obtain a W.O.T. valve, (part number D8ZZ-9F424- A) one (1) rubber cap, (part number 382444-S) one
(1) 6.0" x 5/32" vacuum hose, one (1) 14.0" x 5/32" vacuum hose, one (1) 1.5" x 7/32" vacuum hose and two (2) 1/4" x 1/4" x 3/16" tees, (part number 383017-S).

2. Install the W.O.T. valve in the manner shown in Figure 37.
NOTE: To preclude any interference with the throttle linkage, route the 14.0" hose; connecting the EGR vent port on the carburetor and W.O.T. valve rearward of the throttle cable bracket and underneath the throttle/cruise control cable assemblies. Also, route hose(s) in front of distributor away from spark plug wires to avoid potential electrical interference.
3. Check all vacuum hose connections to ensure there are no vacuum leaks.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
