A/T - C5/A4LD Fluid Leak At Vent

Article No. 85-10-26

TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC - C5/A4LD - FLUID LEAK AT VENT

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-85 RANGER (4x4) AND BRONCO II

When some A4LD/C5 transmissions are overfilled, subjected to extended driving, operated in high ambient temperatures, or used in trailer towing, they may experience transmission fluid leakage at the transmission vent tube rubber hose due to swelling or looseness. If a customer's vehicle exhibits any of the above and leakage is apparent, the following service procedure should be followed:

^ Verify that the transmission fluid leakage is originating at the L.H. rear of the transmission case (in the vent fitting area).

^ Check the transmission vent tube connecting hose to the vent fitting for swelling, looseness or any evidence of transmission fluid on the hose.

^ In those instances where the hose exhibits swelling, looseness, or is contaminated with transmission fluid, remove and discard the vent hose. If during servicing of the transmission for other repairs it is evident that the vent tube hose has been contaminated with transmission fluid, the hose should also be replaced.

^ For C5 transmissions, replace the affected hose with a new piece of hose (E3TZ-7A246-F) cut to 2.5". For A4LD transmissions, the same hose (E3TZ-7A246-F) is used except that it is cut to a 5" length.
