Grille/Headlamp - Wind Whistle
83ford11 Article No. 83-14-18NOISE - WIND WHISTLE - GRILLE AREA
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER, 1984 BRONCO II
A high pitched undulating wind whistle, starting at about 34/45 mph that can be heard by vehicle occupants as well as by a roadside observer may come from air flow between the lefthand side of the grille and the fender. This condition may be serviced by modifying the existing lefthand headlight opening side shield.
NOTE: The retaining barbs on the shield usually break when it is removed. The replacement part is E3TZ-13B042-A. In either case, use the following procedure to modify it.
1. Remove the right and lefthand combination Park/Turn lamps (four exposed screws).
2. Remove the (two) radiator grille retaining screws (one each side) now visible in the Park/Turn lamp cavity.
3. Remove the (ten) exposed screws that further retain the radiator grille and lift out the radiator grille.
4. Using a wide screw driver or gasket scraper, pry out the lefthand headlight opening side shield.
NOTE: The retaining barbs usually break when the shield is removed. However, if the barbs do not break, the shield can be reused for the modification.
Figure 12:
5. Staple a 13" long x 3/4" wide x 1/8" thick length of 3M Scotchfoam vinyl tape (Part No. 06375 - procure locally) adhesive side up to the shield. As shown in Figure 12, position the foam tape so that it extends about 3/8" beyond the shield edge. The ends should be stapled and the other staples should be spaced about 2" apart. Peel off the protective paper from the adhesive side.
6. Peel the protective paper from a 13" long x 3/4" wide x 1/4" thick length of 3M Scotchfoam vinyl tape (Part No. 06370 - procure locally) and adhere it to the 1/8" thick length of tape stapled to the shield (sticky side to sticky side). Rub/squeeze the two tapes together so that a good bond is achieved.
7. Trim the ends of the tape off square with the ends of the shield.
Figure 13:
8. Install the modified shield, making sure the retaining barbs are seated (Figure 13).
9. Carefully center the grille assembly in position between the fenders allowing the "foamlip" of the shield to impinge against the grille end. Install the (ten) retaining screws and tighten to .7-1.0 N-m (6.2-8.6 inch-lbs.) torque.
10. Install the (two) Park/Turn lamp cavity grille retaining screws and tighten to .7-1.0 N-m (6.2-8.6 inch-lbs.) torque.
11. Install the two Park/Turn lamps and tighten the (four) retaining screws to .7-1.0 N-m (6.2-8.6 inch-lbs.) torque.
