Article No. 84-17-18

DIESELING - (2.0L/2.3L) - ENGINE

TEMPERATURE BELOW 160~ AND/OR A/C is ON - MANUAL OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-84 RANGER

CALIBRATIONS: 3-49G-R17, 3-49T-R17, 3-49Y-R17, 3-49G-R20, 3-49T-R20, 3-49Y-R20, 3-49H-R16 and 17, 3-49S-R15 and 16 - 1983-84

Dieseling may occur on 2.0L and 2.3L engines when the ignition is turned off before the coolant temperature has reached 160 ~F, and on A/C equipped vehicles, when the A/C is operating.

If engine dieseling occurs when the ignition key is turned off, perform the following:

^ Check engine idle RPM and set, if required, to specification shown on the vehicle emissions decal located on the radiator support.
^ If dieseling continues with the idle set to specification, replace the parts listed below.

For vehicles with 2.0L engines and manual transmission -
^ Replace Accelerator Cable Assembly with P/N E3TZ-9A758-E For vehicles with 2.3L engines and automatic transmission -
^ Replace the Accelerator Cable Assembly with P/N 9A758 and the kick down bellcrank with P/N 9K713. For vehicles with 2.3L engines and manual transmission -

FIGURE 18:

^ Replace the Accelerator Cable Assembly with P/N 9A758 and the throttle kicker solenoid vacuum valve (9D474) as follows:
- Remove the air cleaner assembly and route the new wiring harness (9E724) along the engine with the existing harness as shown in Figure 18.

FIGURE 19:

- Disconnect the existing harness wire to the throttle kicker (red/w. yellow lash) and connect to the new wiring harness into the 14289 wiring assembly and the throttle kicker (Figure 19).
^ Remove the nut from the ground stud and attach the ground eyelet from the new wiring harness (9E724). Re-install the ground nut and tighten (Figure 19).

FIGURE 20:

^ Install the solenoid vacuum valve as shown in Figure 20. Insure that the vacuum nipples point towards the engine.

FIGURE 21:

^ Make vacuum connections as shown on the schematic in Figure 21.

FIGURE 20:

^ Complete the routing of the new wiring harness (9E724) to the Solenoid Vacuum Valve (9B474) mounted on the ignition module (See Figure 20).
^ Strap the vacuum hoses and the new wiring harness to the existing harness using five (95873-S) bundling straps (See Figure 20).

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
