Engine - Excessive Oil Consumption/Wear

Article No. 85-9-42

OIL CONSUMPTION - AIR CLEANER SEALING - (2.0L AND 2.3L)

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-84 RANGER

Poor air cleaner sealing may exist for several reasons and may contribute to excessive piston ring wear.

The following items should be checked to ensure a proper air cleaner seal:

Air Cleaner Support Bracket

Figure 41 - Air Cleaner Support Bracket:

Deformation of the air cleaner support bracket may occur when removing the air cleaner assembly. Be sure to disconnect the air cleaner support bracket (see Figure 41) from the engine lifting eye and disconnect the duct and valve assembly support bracket. Failure to do this may result in warping the bracket and tray and prevent the tray from sealing to the carburetor gasket.
Air Cleaner Tray Before installing the air cleaner tray, ensure that the air cleaner gasket (C8DZ-9654-A) is in place.

When installing the air cleaner tray, rotate the tray until the mounting bracket is against the lifting eye. If the mounting bracket slot does not align with the tapped hole in the lifting eye, gently bend the bracket (while holding the tray) in the appropriate direction until the hole and slot align.

Air Cleaner Cover If the air cleaner cover does not have an instructional decal referring to the wing nut torque, replace the cover with (E3TZ-9661-A) and secure the cover as stated on the decal.

Wing Nut Sealing Washer Ensure that the sealing washer is in place with the rubber side down (C6TZ-9697-A).
