RAIL PLUGS MISSING

LIGHT TRUCKS 1984 BRONCO, F150/250

On vehicles with subject complaint, raise vehicle on hoist and verify condition. If the rail cup plug has to be replaced, proceed with the following "In Vehicle Repair Sequence".

1. Clean transmission fluid overflow from transmission and shift rail bore.

Figure 16:

2. Using a pencil grinder and a fine tapered stone, lightly break the sharp edge (creating very slight chamfer) at the entrance of the cup plug bore (Figure 16). This is required to ensure that the cup plug seats properly.
3. Thoroughly clean shift rail bore and immediate area.

Figure 17:

4. Apply sealer E0AZ-19554-B (ESE-144Gl67-A2) or approved equivalent to the new cup plug (Part No. N802604-S) and using a brass drift of larger diameter than the cup plug and hammer tap the cup plug into the bore until it seats against the aluminum surface. Do not drive on I.D. of cup plug (Figure 17). Do not disturb other plugs in shaft rail bore because they could deform and loosen causing fluid leakage.
5. Check fluid level and add if necessary. Apply pipe sealant with teflon D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent to the threads of the fill plug and install.
