IDLE ROUGH, POOR FUEL ECONOMY 5.0L ENGINE AND MODEL 2150 CARBURETOR

FORD 1982-84 CANADA ONLY

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982-84 CANADA ONLY

Carburetor enrichment valve internal vacuum source may become restricted by accumulation of condensation, resulting in rough idle and poor fuel economy.

To alleviate concerns of rough idle and carburetor richness and to help prevent misdiagnosis of suspected enrichment valve failures, conversion to an external vacuum source to the valve is recommended. This revision will prevent fuel from condensing/collecting in the power valve cover and will facilitate future leak checking of the valve.

1. Remove the carburetor assembly per section 24 of the Shop Manual.
2. Remove the enrichment valve cover (sometimes referred to as power valve) and discard.
3. Remove the enrichment valve assembly.

Figure 14:

4. With a 1/8" drift punch, install 387116-S lead plug into the vacuum passage. Lightly tap the plug until it is below the hole surface (Figure 14).
5. Reinstall the enrichment valve. Torque to 100/120 in.lbs.
6. Install a new enrichment valve cover. E0TZ-9930-B. This cover has an external vacuum nipple. Torque to 20 in.lbs.
7. Reinstall the carburetor on the engine.
8. Using 7/32 vacuum hose connect it to the enrichment valve cover and to the manifold vacuum nipple in the carburetor spacer. The connection is now complete and is to external vacuum.

9. On Mark VII Town Car and Ford/Mercury station wagon, connect 381401-S060 (6 in.) from the enrichment valve cover to the intake manifold vacuum nipple below the carburetor.

NOTE: Do not substitute the above vacuum hose with NON fuel resistant hose.

10. Run the engine, readjust engine speeds as per specification on the engine decal.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
