CALIBRATIONS: All with EEC IV

Concerns of engine spark knock can be serviced by installation of retard octane rod after other causes have been eliminated.

1. a. Verify customer is not using a sub-standard fuel and the coolant level is up to specification.
b. Check stake marks on distributor base to verify distributor timing has not been changed.
2. a. Ensure the EGR valve and associated components are performing properly.
b. Check fresh air duct and valve assembly for proper operation.
3. Ensure that vacuum hoses are routed and connected securely (refer to emission decal).
4. If after verifying the above, detonation still persists, retard the engine ignition timing 3~. This can be achieved by installing a 3~ retard octane rod, (part no. E3EE-12A335-BA) according to the procedure outlined in the 1984 Car Shop Manual (Section 23).



Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
