IDLE LOPING (ROLLING) - 5.0 NEUTRAL AND DRIVE

FORD 1984 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 GRAND MARQUIS

CALIBRATIONS: All with C.F.I.

An idle loping condition (100 or more R.P.M. variation) can occur on subject vehicles while in "Park" or "Neutral". The condition can be corrected by installation of a new service replacement MAP Sensor.

1. Perform visual check and vehicle preparation for EEC IV Quick Test procedure, in 1984 Car Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual. Refer to Page 20-7, Volume HC.
2. Adjust curb idle speed to spec. (Refer to procedure and specifications on Engine Emission Control Information Decal.)
3. Perform EEC IV Quick Test. If test is okay, proceed to Step 4.
4. Disconnect A/C clutch wire and start engine. Allow engine to run until stabilized temperature is reached. (Be sure transmission "Park" position.)
5. With engine idling and with Heat/AC selector in "Off" position, wait until the throttle kicker deenergizes (approximately 65 seconds).
6. With running engine at part throttle and Heat/AC selector in "Mix" position, the throttle kicker should become energized. Maintain this condition for 1 minute.
7. Return engine to closed throttle position and with transmission in "Park", observe idle quality for three minutes.
8. If the loping idle condition is present (100 RPM or more variance), it is due to a lean idle condition. To alleviate the lean idle condition, install a new service map sensor. The sensor (part no. E43Z-9F497-B) can be identified by a yellow dot on the top surface of the sensor, 9. After replacing the map sensor (located on the right hand fender apron), check all speeds and, if necessary, reset fast idle to curb to specification shown on emission decal.
10. Reconnect A/C clutch wire.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
