Subject: Service Recall 475 -- Incorrect Incomplete Vehicle Manuals and Incorrect Chassis-Cab Conformity Labels Provided With Certain 1984 Model Ranger Chassis-Cab Vehicles.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that certain 1984 model Ranger chassiscabs were provided with incorrect Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manuals (IVM's) and Chassis-Cab Conformity Labels. Units included in this service action are all 1984 Ranger chassis-cabs built at the Louisville Assembly Plant from September 1, 1983 through September 23, 1983. The incorrect IVM's and Chassis-Cab Conformity Labels provided with affected chassis-cabs do not reference Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 105, "Hydraulic Brake Systems" or No. 114, "Theft Protection", which became applicable to trucks on September 1, 1983. IVM's and Chassis-Cab Conformity Labels are intended to provide information relating to compliance of the vehicle to applicable Federal Safety Standards, which may be useful to persons completing the vehicles by mounting bodies or other equipment to the chassis cabs.

The enclosed listing of Vehicle Identification Numbers identifies chassis-cabs that our records indicate were shipped to your location. Also enclosed are 1984 Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manuals and Chassis-Cab Conformity Labels applicable to each of these units.

Persons who have performed additional manufacturing operations on these chassiscabs should review the FMVSS No. 105 and 114 sections of the 1984 Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manual with respect to those operations. Any questions arising from this review may be referred to your District Office.

Body Builders or Dealers Who Have or Will Have Performed Manufacturing Operations on an Affected Chassis Cab

For your records and in support of your FMVSS certification of the completed vehicle, you may wish to:

^ Cut out the label on the front cover of the Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manual provided with the chassis-cab, and attach it to the front cover of the 1984 Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manual accompanying this letter. Dispose of the Incomplete Vehicle Manual originally provided with the chassis-cab.

^ Install the enclosed Chassis-Cab Conformity Label to the chassis-cab driver's door pillar.

1. Locate the Chassis-Cab Conformity Label that is presently on the door pillar. This label is very similar in appearance to the enclosed label.

2. With a clean dry rag, wipe the label on the door pillar and the surrounding sheet metal free of moisture, dirt and grease.

3. Remove the protective backing from the enclosed label and place it directly over the similar label on the door pillar, applying pressure over the entire surface of the label to help assure adhesion. Be sure you do not install the new label over the completed vehicle certification label, which carries the vehicle identification number (VIN).

Dealers Who Have Not Performed Manufacturing Operations on an Affected Chassis-Cab

If you are a dealer and have shipped an affected chassis-cab to a body builder for further manufacturing operations, please send a 1984 Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manual and a Chassis-Cab Conformity Label, along with a copy of this letter, to the body builder.

If an affected chassis-cab has been sold directly to an owner prior to any further manufacturing operations, please send the enclosed 1984 Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manual, the Chassis-Cab Conformity Label, and a copy of this dealer/body builder letter to the owner.

If you have not received or cannot locate a chassis-cab identified on the enclosed listing, return the Chassis-Cab Conformity Label and the 1984 Light Truck Incomplete Vehicle Manual to the following address with a brief explanation:
