Disassemble
1. Remove the lower extension housing to case attaching screw to drain lubricant.2. Remove cover attaching screws and the cover from case.
3. Remove the long spring retaining detent plug in case, then, using a magnet, remove detent plug.
4. Remove extension housing to case screws and the extension housing.
5. Remove input shaft bearing retainer attaching screws and slide retainer from input shaft.
6. Support countershaft gear with a wire hook. Working from front of case, push countershaft out rear of case with a dummy shaft. Lower countershaft gear to bottom of case and remove the wire hook.
Ford Overdrive (Except Single Rail & Top Mounted Shifter) 4-Speed Manual Transmission:
7. Remove set screw from first and second speed shift fork, then slide first and second speed shift rail out rear of case.
8. With a magnet, remove interlock detent from between the first and second and the third and overdrive shift rails.
9. Shift transmission into overdrive position. Remove set screw from the third and overdrive shift fork. Remove the side detent bolt, detent plug and spring. Rotate the third and overdrive speed shift rail 90° and tap rail out front of case with a suitable punch and hammer.
10. With a magnet, remove interlock plug from top of case.
11. Remove snap ring securing speedometer drive gear to output shaft, then slide gear from shaft. Remove speedometer gear drive ball.
12. Remove output shaft bearing retaining snap ring and the snap ring from outside diameter of output shaft bearing.
13. Remove output shaft bearing.
14. Remove input shaft bearing retaining snap ring and the snap ring from outside diameter of input shaft bearing.
15. Remove input shaft bearing from shaft and case, then the input shaft and blocking from front of case.
Removing Shift Forks:
16. Position output shaft to right side of case and remove shift forks.
Removing Output Shaft Assembly:
17. Lift output shaft assembly from case support the thrust washer and first speed gear to prevent the washer and gear from sliding from shaft.
Removing Reverse Shift Rail:
18. Remove reverse gear shift fork set screw, rotate reverse shift rail 90°, slide shift rail out rear of case and lift the reverse shift fork from case.
19. With a magnet, remove reverse detent plug and spring with a magnet.
Removing Reverse Idler Gear Shaft:
20. Remove reverse idler gear shaft with a dummy shaft and lower reverse idler gear to bottom of case.
21. Lift countershaft gear and thrust washers from bottom of case, using caution not to drop bearings or the dummy shaft from countershaft gear.
22. Lift reverse idler gear shaft from causing caution not to drop bearings or the dummy shaft from reverse idler gear.
Output Shaft Disassembled:
23. Remove snap ring from front of output shaft and slide the third and overdrive synchronizer, blocking and gear from output shaft.
24. Remove the next snap ring and the second speed gear thrust washer, gear and blocking ring from output shaft.
25. Remove the next snap ring and the first speed gear thrust washer, gear and blocking ring from rear of output shaft.
