STALL - IDLE OR DECEL - (2.3L) EFI AND EEC IV
LIGHT TRUCKS 1985 RANGER
CALIBRATIONS: All 2.3L
NOTE: This article supersedes TSB article 84-19- 13 for the above vehicle application.
The EEC IV system on 1985 models has a new feature called "Adaptive Strategy". The "Adaptive Strategy" adjusts the engine calibration to correct the variations in the EEC IV components.
A short learning period may be required on some vehicles when:
1. The vehicle is new or, 2. The battery has been disconnected or, 3. An EEC component is disconnected or replaced.
Vehicles must be operated in the problem mode to allow appropriate learning. Learning can occur only after the engine has reached a normal stabilized operating temperature.
For a customer concern of idle or decel to idle stalls on the above vehicle perform the following procedures:
1. Assure the vehicle has a yellow dot MAP sensor (E43F-9F479-BlA).
2. Bring the engine to normal operating temperature (upper radiator hose hot and pressurized). For Idle Stalls
3a. Idle the engine in neutral at curb idle speed for 30 to 45 seconds.
b. Momentarily increase the engine speed then return to idle.
c. Repeat step 3b five times or until the idle speed is stable at 650 +/- 50 rpm. For Decel to Idle Stalls
4. Drive the vehicle up to 5 miles of stop and go city driving.
