Engine - Hard Start/No Start/Rich Condition

Article No. 85-24-21

HARD START/NO START -ENGINE FLOODING AND/OR RICH CONDITION (2.3L EFI) - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE OCTOBER 21, 1985

LIGHT TRUCK 1986 AEROSTAR

All 2.3L Aerostar vehicles built before October 21, 1985 may be susceptible to engine flooding. A spring tab on the processor mounting bracket may make contact with an injector driver mounting screw located on the side of the processor. The plating on the injector mounting screw provides some insulation, but because of the vibration, can be chaffed through by the spring tab and result in a short circuit to ground. This short circuit causes the fuel injectors in cylinders No. 2 and No. 3 to dump fuel into the cylinders. This can result in a no start or if the engine is running, black smoke and a stall at idle condition.

Figure 38:

1. With the ignition "off", bend the inboard (see Figure 38) spring tab away from the processor by at least 1/8 inch. This can be done by slipping a screwdriver under the spring tab and forcing it away from the processor. This can be performed without removal of any hardware.
2. If the vehicle has been serviced for the above concern, it is very likely that the crankcase oil is contaminated with fuel. It will therefore be necessary to replace the crankcase oil and oil filter.

NOTE: The processor will not suffer any damage due to this condition and will not require replacement.
