IDLE - ROUGH - BLACK SMOKE (2.9L) - MANUAL TRANSMISSION

LIGHT TRUCK 1986 RANGER, BRONCO II

Some of the subject vehicles may exhibit a rich fuel mixture condition. As a result, the customer may be concerned about a rough idle and/or black smoke (emitting from tailpipe) condition.

To correct the condition, the following procedure is recommended.

1. Using Rotunda EEC IV Monitor 007-00018 or Super Star Tester 007-00019, perform EEC IV Self-Test. Verify and service all codes as directed by the 1986 Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H.

2. If after performing Step 1 and service code 42 remains during key-on engine running, proceed to Step 3.

3. During self-test, if code 42 occurs (key-on engine running) verify EEC processor module part number.

4. If vehicle is equipped with one of the modules with part number E6TF-12A650-CB, E6TF-12A650-LA or E6TF-12A650-MA, replace with corresponding modules on the following application chart.

NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with any of the EEC processor modules listed in the "ADD" column, DO NOT CHANGE due to warranty implications.

5. With a Sharpie No. 49 pen, update the engine calibration number from R00 level to R10 level.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
