Octane Rod Removal and Installation

2. Refer to Exhibit 2. Change the initial ignition timing from 10~ to 7~ BTDC by replacing the existing octane adjustment rod in the distributor with new E3FZ-12A335-D octane adjustment rod.

A. Remove the distributor cap and rotor for visual access.

B. Locate the octane adjustment boss and remove the 4 mm retaining screw.

C. Slide the octane adjustment rod grommet partially away from the boss of the distributor housing to a point where the stator assembly can move freely. Gently lift the rod over stator assembly post. Remove the rod and grommet.

NOTE: Retain the grommet for use with the new rod.

D. Install the grommet on the new service rod and reinstall the rod in the distributor, making sure to capture the stator post with the hole in the new service rod.

E. Install the retaining screw (4 mm) and tighten to 2.3-3.4 N-m (23-30 lb.in.).

F. Replace the distributor cap and rotor.

3. Replace the existing spark plugs with new BSF42C spark plugs.

4. Add a vacuum retard delay valve in the air control system as follows:

Refer to Exhibit 3. Install a D7AZ-12A208-A vacuum retard delay valve (# 5, white/pink) in the vacuum line connected to the air control side of the combination air bypass/air control valve using a 3" length of DOPZ-12226-B vacuum hose (5/32" ID). The pink side of the delay valve must be positioned toward the air control valve. Use two 95874-S tie straps to keep the vacuum line away from the EGR valve.

5. Reset the fast idle and idle speed control (ISC) according to the instructions on the VECI decal.
