Compressor Clutch: Testing and Inspection

MAGNETIC CLUTCH FIELD COIL CURRENT TEST 6-CYLINDER COMPRESSOR
1. Disconnect the wire connector at the clutch.
2. Connect negative (-) terminal of an ammeter to one of the field coil terminals. Connect a jumper wire to a good ground from the other field coil terminal.
3. Connect a jumper wire to the ammeter positive (+) terminal and connect the other end of the jumper wire to the battery positive (+) terminal.
4. With engine running and at operating temperature, the current draw should be approximately 3.44 amperes and an audible click should be heard to indicate clutch engagement. Maintain current draw test for 5 minutes or longer if necessary if intermittent coil operation is suspected.
5. If the current draw is not approximately 3.44 amperes, replace the magnetic clutch field coil.
