MODELS W/MODULAR STEERING COLUMN, EXC. ESCORT, LYNX, EXP, LN7, TEMPO & TOPAZ
EXCEPT TILT COLUMN)
Refer to Figs. 3, 7 and 8 for component identification.
Removal
1. Remove steering column assembly.
2. On column shift models, remove shift cane assembly as described previously.
3. Remove turn signal switch and washer wiper switch.
4. Remove upper steering shaft bearing as described previously.
5. Remove the two bolts which connect the lock cylinder housing to the outer tube flange bracket, then rotate the ignition key to start position and pull actuator interlock nut out of clearance hole in tube. Lift casting off upper steering shaft.
6. On column shift models, replace the shift selector detent plate if damaged or excessively worn.
Installation
1. Install upper steering shaft bearing and sleeve in lock cylinder housing and install upper bearing retainer plate.
2. Using a punch, upset the serrated portion of the upper shaft sufficiently to assure an interference fit between the bearing inner race and the steering column upper shaft. Place lock cylinder housing on steering column flange bracket with upper steering shaft protruding through upper bearing. Turn ignition key to Start position to locate actuator interlock through the clearance hole in outer tube. Install the two lock cylinder housing bolts and torque to 12---21 ft. lbs.
3. Place a piece of pipe ({3-4} inch inside dia. x 1{1-2} inch long) over end of steering column upper shaft and install steering wheel nut. Tighten steering wheel nut until steering shaft is drawn up into bearing enough to allow installation of snap ring in groove on shaft. Remove nut and pipe.
4. Install snap ring, turn signal switch and washer/wiper switch.
5. On column shift models, install shift cane as described previously.
6. Install steering column as described previously.

TILT COLUMN
Refer to Figs. 5, 9 and 10 for component identification.
Removal
1. Remove steering column assembly as described under ``Steering Column, Replace''.
2. On models with column shift, remove shift cane assembly.
3. Remove windshield wiper/washer switch, then remove steering wheel.
4. Remove upper conical spring, bearing plate and C-clip ring.
5. Move tilt column to the uppermost position to unload spring.
6. Using tool No. T67P-3D739B, or equivalent, remove tilt pivot pins. Use care when removing pivot pins, the tilt spring is still under pressure.
7. Remove upper casting from lock cylinder housing.
8. On all except Ford & Mercury full size, 1982---83 Mark VI & Town Car, remove bolt and nut attaching lower U-joint shaft assembly to steering column shaft.
9. On all models, remove steering shaft assembly from steering column.
10. Remove two bolts attaching lock cylinder housing to outer tube flange bracket, then rotate ignition key to Start position and pull actuator interlock out of clearance hole in tube.
11. Remove ignition lock drive gear and actuator.
Fig. 17 Installing flange assembly pivot pins:
Installation
1. Position lock cylinder housing on upper steering column flange bracket. Place key in Start position to locate actuator interlock through clearance hole in outer tube. Install and torque two bolts attaching lock cylinder housing to bracket to 12 to 20 ft. lbs.
2. Install steering shaft assembly into steering column tube.
3. Install upper casting assembly with tilt spring in position, over end of shaft and down into lock cylinder ears making certain lock lever is latched into the top tilt position.
4. Install tilt pivot pins through lower casting holes and into upper casting using a C-clamp, Fig. 17. Pivot pins must be flush with outer casing surface.
5. Install C-clip ring on upper shaft groove above bearing.
6. Install upper bearing plate and conical spring. Press spring onto upper shaft until spring snaps into groove.
7. Install turn signal switch and windshield wiper/washer switch.
8. On column shift models, install shift cane assembly.
9. On all except Ford & Mercury full size, 1982---83 Mark VI & Town Car, install lower U-joint shaft assembly into lower steering shaft. Install attaching bolt with bolt head against concave portion of tube. Torque nut and bolt to 35 to 45 ft. lbs.
10. On all models, install steering column, then install steering wheel.
