Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

A visual inspection is an important part of the system test. When performing a visual inspection, check all components for abnormal conditions such as bare, broken, or disconnected wires, damaged vacuum reserve tanks and hoses. In order for the speed control system to function properly, it is necessary that the speedometer cables be properly routed and securely attached. The servo (throttle actuator) assembly and throttle linkage should operate freely and smoothly. The bead chain should have not more than 1/4 inch freeplay on 1980---81 models or 1/8 inch free play on 1982-87 models, with throttle set in hot idle position. On 1983-87 Ranger, 1984-87 Bronco II & 1986-87 Aerostar, the actuator cable is pre-adjusted with .094 inch slack. If adjustment is necessary, the cable should be adjusted as tight as possible, without opening throttle plate or increasing idle speed.
