Timing Belt: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cables, then remove engine cooling fan, fan shroud and accessory drive belts.
2. Rotate crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke, then remove crankshaft pulley using suitable tool.
3. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers, then mark direction of rotation on belt(s) to be removed.
4. Loosen belt tensioners, then remove timing belt(s) as required. If injection pump/camshaft belt requires replacement, the silent shaft belt will have to be removed first.

INSTALLATION
1. Align crankshaft, lefthand silent shaft and righthand silent shaft sprocket timing marks with marks shown in Fig. 12, then pry on tensioner spring to reduce load on tensioner and install silent shaft belt.
2. Align camshaft and injection pump sprocket timing marks with marks shown, Fig. 12, then install injection pump/camshaft belt as follows:
a. Release tension on tensioner spring with suitable tool, then rotate tensioner toward water pump and tighten upper bolt.
b. Install and position timing belt onto sprockets, then while maintaining tension on belt, loosen upper tensioner bolt to position tensioner against belt.
3. Adjust timing belt(s) as outlined under ``Timing Belts, Adjust'' procedure.
4. Reverse steps 1 through 3 of removal procedure to complete installation.
