Transfer Case/Transmission - Leaks At Case Juncture
87ford25Article No. 87-25-13
^ LEAK - TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKS AT TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION EXTENSION
^ TRANSMISSION - FLUID LEAK - NEW TRANSFER CASE TO TRANSMISSION EXTENSION GASKET
LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-88 RANGER, BRONCO II
ISSUE: Transmission fluid leaks at the transfer case to transmission extension may be due to gasket damage or burrs on the transmission extension or transfer case mounting surfaces. The burrs on the mounting surfaces can prevent the parts from mating and sealing properly.
ACTION: To correct this, inspect the mounting surfaces for burrs and remove if required. Also, install a new thicker transfer case to transmission extension gasket using the following service procedure.
1. Inspect the transmission extension and transfer case mounting surfaces for raised burrs. Remove burrs and make sure mounting surfaces fit together smoothly.
FIGURE 11:
2. Position a new transfer case to transmission extension gasket (E7TZ-7086-B) between the transfer case and the transmission extension, Figure 11.
3. Raise the transfer case with a transmission jack so that the transmission output shaft aligns with the splined transfer case input shaft.
4. Slide the transfer case forward onto the transmission output shaft and onto the dowel pins.

5. Install the five (5) transfer case retaining bolts to the extension housing. Tighten the bolts to 25-43 ft.lbs. (34-58 N-m) in the sequence shown in Figure 12.
