EEC IV QUICK TEST - 4.9L - SERVICE CODE "18" DISPLAYED IN ERROR
LIGHT TRUCK: 1988 E-SERIES, F-SERIES, BRONCO
ISSUE: Service code "18" (SPOUT circuit open) may be displayed during Engine Running Self-Test in error on light trucks with less than 1000 miles (1600 kilometers). The SPOUT circuit test is performed by the EEC IV processor changing spark timing and then measuring the engine RPM drop. High internal engine friction during the first 1000 miles could cause an insufficient engine RPM drop that could result in service code "18".
ACTION: If service code "18" is displayed while performing the Engine Running SelfTest, make sure service code "18" is valid by using the following diagnostic procedure.
1. Check to make sure the SPOUT circuit connector jumper bar is correctly installed. Service as required.
2. Re-run Engine Running Self-Test. During the two (2) minute timing delay, check to see if the timing is to the base timing specification of +20 degrees + or -3 degrees.
3. If the timing is to specification, discontinue the Engine Running Self-Test and ignore service code "18".
4. If the timing is not to specification, refer to the Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H, Pinpoint Test P.
