Article No. 88-12-24
LIGHT TRUCK: 1988 E-SERIES, F-SERIES, BRONCO
ISSUE: Spark knock or an engine "miss" during heavy acceleration from low engine RPM or while the engine is under a heavy load may be caused by the routing of the spark plug ignition wires. The routing may cause the engine to crossfire between cylinder numbers (5) five and six (6).
FIGURE 18:
ACTION: To correct this, reroute the spark plug ignition wires using the following procedure.
1. Check to see if the spark plug ignition wires number five (5) and six (6), are routed as shown in Figure 18.
2. Locate the spark plug ignition wire holder closest to the distributor cap and remove wires number six (6), seven (7), and eight (8), Figure 18.
3. Locate the spark plug ignition wire holder further down near the left hand rocker arm cover and remove wires number six (6), seven (7), and eight (8), Figure 18.
FIGURE 19:
4. Install the spark plug ignition wires in both wire holders in the following order: five (5), seven (7), eight (8), and six (6). Refer to Figure 19.
5. Apply a Ford Authorized Modification Decal noting the above changes on the vehicle.
