Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal and move out of way.
2. Drain cooling system and crankcase.
3. Remove cooling fan.
4. Loosen water pump hub bolts.
5. Loosen and remove accessory drive belts.
6. Remove water pump pulley.
7. Remove alternator adjusting arm and brace from throttle body.
8. Remove A/C bracket, A/C compressor, and brace as an assembly. Move assembly out of the way and wire tie to frame.
9. Remove crankshaft pulley and damper.
10. Remove water pump assembly if required.
Water Pump Fastener Chart:
NOTE: Timing cover may be removed with water pump intact. Do not remove bolt numbers 11 through 15 to perform this operation.
11. Remove oil Pan assembly. Disconnect oil level sensor (if equipped) before pan removal.
12. Remove timing cover to cylinder block attaching bolts.
13. Carefully remove timing cover from cylinder block. Discard old gasket.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean cylinder block gasket surface.
2. Clean timing cover gasket surface carefully as aluminum gouges easily.
3. Replace crankshaft seal.
Timing Chain Cover Installation:
4. Install timing cover and new gasket and tighten bolts to 25 Nm (19 ft lb).
NOTE: Lightly oil all bolt threads except for those requiring special sealant.
Pipe Sealant To Bolt Thread Application:
NOTE: bolts that require pipe sealant on accompanying chart.
5. Install oil pan and new gasket.
6. Install water pump (if removed).
7. Install crankshaft damper, attaching bolt, and pulley.
8. Install A/C bracket, compressor assembly, and brace.
9. Install alternator adjusting arm, and brace.
10. Install water pump pulley and accessory drive belts.
11. Install cooling fan and coolant hoses.
12. Fill cooling system with proper coolant mixture.
13. Fill crankcase with specified amount and viscosity of engine oil.
14. Run engine and check for oil and coolant leaks.
