ISSUE: A "rattling" or "squealing" noise coming from the engine compartment may be caused by the FX-15 air conditioning compressor. The piston shoes inside the compressor are made out of powdered metal. Friction inside the compressor along with high compressor head pressures can cause the powdered metal piston shoes to produce various types of noises.
ACTION: Install a new design FX-15 air conditioning compressor that has piston shoes made out of steel. The steel piston shoe design will better withstand continuous high compressor head pressures. Refer to the 1989 Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume A, Section 36-65 for service details.
