DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

The Leece Neville 165 ampere alternator is a selfcurrent limiting unit with a fully adjustable solid state regulator. The negative output terminal is internally grounded for negative ground systems. The alternator features sealed ball bearings, with slip rings and brushes that are in a sealed housing mounted on the slip ring end housing. Six silicon diodes mounted in heat sinks convert alternating current from the delta wound stator into direct current. A capacitor connected between the heat sinks assists in suppressing transient voltage spikes which could possibly damage the diodes. The brushes and voltage regulator are located in a waterproof housing that may be removed for replacement or inspection without disassembling the alternator.

ADJUSTMENTS

Before performing any tests or adjustments on the alternator, refer to Section 27-06, Belt Accessory Drive Service for belt inspection and adjustment procedures. Refer to Section 31-02, Charging System General Service for battery inspection and state of charge condition.
